Rising Seniors
For your summer reading assignment, please read all three of the books listed below:
Lord of the Flies, William Golding
Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
They are short. The longest novel is Fahrenheit and it’s not very long. If you’ve read it before, read it again. You’ll get more out of it the second time around and you’ll do better on the test.
Read your books before we return to school in September. There's no project. Just read them. Keep a journal. I’m not going to grade the journal, but it will help you keep up with characters and themes. It wouldn’t hurt to read some online commentary on the books, although this is not required. Bloom’s is an excellent resource for commentary. Search under the “criticism” tab and look for article titles that interest you. The critical essays will help you review the books and may give you a deeper understanding than you would otherwise have since they are written by scholars. Shmoop is a good resource as well.

There will be a test over each of the books when we return to school, or a paper, or both. The score will have a significant impact on your first MP grade, so read carefully. Take notes on key plot events, character development, symbols, other rhetorical techniques, and all elements that combine to convey the themes.
