For your summer reading assignment, please read Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

and one (1) of these–your choice:

Rise to Rebellion,   Jeff Shaara

OR

The Killer Angels, Michael Shaara

Read your books before we return to school in September. There's no project. Just read them. Keep a journal.  I’m not going to grade the journal, but it will help you keep up with characters and key plot events. 

The Shaara novels are long, so don’t put this off.

There will  be a test over each of the books when we return to school, or a paper, or both.  The score will have a significant impact on your first MP grade, so read carefully. Take notes on key plot events, character development, symbols, if any, and other rhetorical techniques. 

You will read two (2) books total.  Everyone is required to read the Douglass autobiography.

Everyone will read one of the two Shaara books.  

You can read all three if you want, but you will only be tested on two.
